Great work Julie. I have been proclaiming the benefits of engagement for over 20 years. I have coached and done training programs on the subject. I concur with everything that I have ever read that you have written.

My work is different from yours. I liken your work to a university degree. What I do is more like a one year program designed to provide the knowledge, tools, skills, and habits that a fee based financial planner needs. I have found that many advisors seem to lack the creativity to develop concrete processes to drive their entire client experience.

For example, I have a template to render specific customized advice that an advisor or company can make their own. I provide several different fee calculators that can be used to determine what fees to charge. I have the engagement process broken down into 12 steps. I even provide a word for word script as to how to determine someone’s values.

Overall I think there is very little conflict in what we are both saying. I am going to start work on a book which I was going to call Total Engagement. Because it’s too close to Absolute Engagement I feel compelled to use something else. I don’t want anyone to think that I am copying your work.

I do keep noticing more and more stuff that I think that I created, is being used by many others. For example the term ROL (return on life). I have used that since about 95! In fact, some years later it was published as part of the Advocis Best Practices Manual. (I did about 200 pages of the manual – engagement, advice, etc.) There are a few people total that have taken enormous chunks of my work and had the audacity to use it without changing anything!

The bottom line is, I really don’t care if it benefits advisors.

Please keep up the good work. I am anxious to read the whole new book. Actually I think that your book will likely help mine. If I am in doubt about infringing on any of your work, I will ask you for your opinion.

There will be a “course” that I will teach virtually, hopefully to large groups of people. Who knows, maybe your new book will be required reading for my course.

    All the best,

Thanks John and thanks for all the great work you do with advisors. Engagement is a massive topic and the more people examining it, the better! Best of luck with your book – looking forward to reading it.
